The geography of a region

From mountain milk to the cheese board

Piedmontese cheeses reflect Alpine pastures, the hills of the Langhe and Roero, the valleys of Ossola and the skills of cheesemakers and affineurs.

A thoughtfully assembled cheese board becomes a lesson in geography, comparing different types of milk, textures and ageing methods.

Protected names with distinct identities

Seven Piedmont-specific PDOs

Toma Piemontese, Bra, Raschera, Castelmagno, Murazzano, Robiola di Roccaverano and Ossolano are the seven PDO names specific to Piedmont identified in official sources.

Gorgonzola, Grana Padano and Taleggio are also produced within Piedmont but have PDO areas spanning other regions. PDO is a regulated designation, not a label for all cheese made locally.

An international gathering

Cheese in Bra

Since 1997 the town of Bra has hosted Cheese, the artisanal cheese event organised by Slow Food and the municipality.

Shepherds, cheesemakers, affineurs and visitors explore raw milk, traditional grazing and the survival of small-scale production. Official event dates should be checked directly with the organiser.

Women preserving a Turin tradition

Latteria Bera

Latteria Bera on Via San Tommaso in Turin is documented as a historic business dating to 1919. Since 1958 successive women in the same family have run the shop.

The work of selecting, maturing and selling cheese is itself a craft; the business should not be confused with a producer of a particular PDO cheese.
